About Kamandalu Ubud Resort

Kamandalu Ubud Resort is a serene, 5-star resort located a short drive from downtown Ubud, the culture center of Bali. The resort was designed to look like a traditional Balinese village, with private villas with thatched roofs scattered throughout a lush estate overlooking rice terraces.

The tranquility and privacy of the resort makes it perfect for honeymoons, romantic getaways, and family retreats.

The resort has one of the largest swimming pools in Ubud with a swim-up bar and tropical cocktails. The villas are spacious and open up to private backyards with gardens, infinity pools, Balinese daybeds, lounge chairs, and outdoor showers.

There’s smiling and gracious hotel staff at every turn, flowers on every path, and the relaxing sound of nature in the air.

If you’re caught in an afternoon rain, I promise that you will have never felt so rejuvenated!

How to get to Kamandalu Ubud Resort

Where is the resort located?

Kamandalu Ubud Resort is located in Ubud, one of the most popular destinations in central Bali.

Ubud is known for traditional arts and crafts, rice fields, temples and shrines, ancient holy sites, and landmarks such as the Tegallalang Rice Terrace and Ubud Monkey Forest. Ubud is less touristy than the seaside town of Kuta, som it’s a more relaxing and authentic Balinese experience.

Kamandalu Ubud Resort is perfect for those who want to be close to a popular destination, but also like the peace that comes with being on the outskirts of town.

The resort is located 3km from the center of Ubud and offers free shuttle service to Ubud center six times a day. You can rent a bicycle from the hotel. Nearby are several shops and stands that cater more toward locals than tourists.

Getting there from the airport

Kamandalu Ubud Resort is just under 40km from Ngurah Rai International Airport, which is in southern Bali. Depending on traffic, this is about a one hour drive.

View directions on Google Maps.

The best way to get to the resort is to arrange an airport pick-up through the hotel, which can be done during your booking.

There are several options for pickup from Ngurah Rai International Airport:

  • Airport shuttle
  • Private car
  • Limousine

I recommend this because you might be jetlagged when you arrive and not used to local travel conditions. Once you’re rested and and have a better understanding of the options and costs for local transportation, then it is safer to venture out on your own.

Review of the Garden Pool Villas

I stayed at the Garden Pool Villa for five days at the Kamandalu Ubud Resort, and was treated to breathtaking views of Ubud’s rice terraces every day. My villa had indoor-outdoor living features and was spotless, quiet, and relaxing.

Sunken bathtub and four poster bed

Each Garden Pool Villa has a thatched roof, marble floors, four poster bed, and sunken bathtub with a hand shower. When you check in, you’re greeted with a bowl of fresh exotic fruits and fresh flowers throughout the room.

The king-sized bed was cozy and comfortable, and I slept well every night despite being a light and sometimes anxious sleeper. Though I usually prefer sleeping in silence, something about the calming sounds of nature in Ubud pulled me into some of the deepest sleep I had in months. I woke up feeling rested and happy every day.

Infinity pool and day bed

Perhaps the best part of the Garden Pool Villas is exactly its name: the garden and the pool. Each villa opens to a lush garden with views of terraced rice paddies, a private infinity pool, lounge chairs, a day bed, and an outdoor shower.

This private outdoor space is perfect for unwinding, whether it’s sitting on a lounge chair enjoying the fruit basket, taking a nap on the day bed, or going for a swim in your own infinity pool.

I personally found the pool a bit too chilly, but those who enjoy a cool dip in tropical weather will think it’s refreshing.

On-Site Amenities

Hotel pool with swim-up bar

The common area of Kamandalu Ubud Resort features an infinity pool accessible by all hotel guests, complete with umbrellas, lounge chairs, and a swim-up bar where you can order exotic cocktails to sip at your leisure. The pool is relatively shallow and warmer than the private pool in my villa and a perfect temperature for me.

I had traveled to Bali in February, which is off-season due to many people having gone home for Lunar New Year, so there were few other guests at the hotel and I often had the pool entirely to myself.

A side note: if you look closely at the photos, you’ll see that the “ground” is a very shallow pool in itself, so your feet are always partly in water as you walk around the pool area. I found this to be refreshing amidst the tropical weather.

Balinese spa

During my stay at Kamandalu Ubud Resort, I decided to visit Chaya Spa for a 150 minute “Pampering Of Kamandalu” session.

The session started with a flower foot soak and reflexology, and was followed by a full-body Indonesian massage and a papaya scrub. I was then led to another room for a milk and honey flower bath with a cup of ginger and honey tea. The spa experience was a ritual for the senses, melted away my stress, and I still think of it fondly to this day!

This being said, I suggest that you also explore spa options outside of the hotel. The pricing for spa treatments on the hotel grounds are similar to the prices that you’ll see in Europe or North America. Prices drop sharply once you leave the hotel grounds, although you may not be in as luxurious of an environment.

The resort also offers a spa called the Forest Spa, where services are provided outdoors underneath a canopy a trees, and includes access to a forest swing and a glass of healthy juice.

Complimentary sunrise yoga session

Kamandalu Ubud Resort offers a complimentary beginner yoga session at 7:30am every morning at the bright and airy Rumah Yoga location, where you can also practice at your leisure throughout the day.

Restaurants and dining

Kamandalu Ubud Resort offers a large selection of different dining experiences, including:

  • Lagoon romantic dinner
  • Intimate boat dining
  • Picnic lunch on a boat
  • Floating breakfast or brunch
  • Romantic flower bath with canapes
  • Flower pool with wine
  • Forest dining
  • Candlelight garden dinner
  • Barbecue dinner

My booking came with complimentary breakfast every morning consisting of rotis, curries, and fruits. I also had one poolside lunch by the hotel infinity pool, and one dinner at Petulu Restaurant. The food was fresh, beautifully presented, and delicious!

Side note: Insects and reptiles!

This topic deserves its own section because there simply are a lot of small creatures in Bali, including at the Kamandalu Ubud Resort. Tiny geckos appear after desk on walls, small frogs sing a relaxing chorus every night, and bugs make it necessary to draw nets over your bed before you sleep at night. I even saw a frog swimming in the hotel infinity pool!

But don’t worry. These small creatures are harmless and only add to the charm of the place.
